the National Agricultural Library (NAL), part of the U.S.
Department of Agriculture. To access the online database for
the nutritional breakdown of individual food items, select
the “food composition” tab and then “searchable database”.

National Academy of Sciences (NAS) - The National Academy
of Sciences (NAS) is a private, non-profit, self-perpetuating
society of distinguished scholars engaged in scientific and
engineering research, dedicated to the furtherance of science
and technology and to their use for the general welfare. Upon
the authority of the charter granted to it by the Congress
in 1863, the Academy has a mandate that requires it to advise
the federal government on scientific and technical matters.
Arbor Nutrition
Guide - Arbor Nutrition Guide is a very useful nutrition
“meta” site that is located in Australia and managed by a
primary care physician named Tony Helman. It is designed mainly
for health professionals and is particularly useful for clinical
nutrition. One can also sign up for a free weekly “newsletter”
that reviews recent clinical nutrition research.
The Economic
Research Service (ERS) is the main source of economic
information and research from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The mission of ERS is to inform and enhance public and private
decision making on economic and policy issues related to agriculture,
food, natural resources, and rural development. To accomplish
this mission, highly trained economists and social scientists
develop and distribute a broad range of economic and other
social science information and analysis.

a source for up-to-date, scientifically accurate information
regarding the roles of specific vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals
(plant chemicals that may affect health), and other nutrients
in preventing disease and promoting health:
